Dodge County High School's shop class

Many say that they will change the world one step at a time, but Dodge County High School's shop class is changing the community one car at a time. For the past five years, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department’s patrol cars have been brought to DCHS’s shop so that the class could do maintenance on the cars; the maintenance being performed by the students ranges from changing oil to replacing the engines.

“If it is broken, we will handle and fix it together as a class,” says the shop teacher, Joey Jones.

The class is a part of the pathway course. Pathways are the sequence of courses that the state offers to provide credit in an individualized career path. The pathway that Jones teaches is Transportation Logistical Support. The classes within this pathway are: foundations of transportation, electrical system and design, chassis system and design, and engine performance concepts. Most of the work done in the class consists of hands-on activities, and “everything that is taught is used,” Jones said.

“It is a great opportunity for us to have this program at Dodge County High School,” says counselor Tabitha McRae

Through fixing and maintaining the cars, the students learn the basic mechanical skills that many need to know. Jones shares that keeping the cars in order not only helps the students gain knowledge, but it gives a boost to everyone’s self confidence and strengthens the ties between the students and the law enforcement officers.

By allowing the classes to fix the cars, the county is able to save money. The Sheriff’s department provides the class with the parts that the car needs, but the cost of manual labor is free.

“They supply the parts; we supply the labor,” states Jones.

“It’s good experience for our boys and girls, and it saves money for the tax payers. We are proud to be able to help out the community by doing this service,” remarks CTAE Director Sonya Bundick.

The local sheriff also is appreciative of the service that the shop students provide. “This service helps the county save money and gives the kids experience in car repair at the same time,” states Sheriff Lynn Sheffield. ....  Brooke Hester
